Our tips for hatching eggs successfully

Successfully hatching chicken eggs requires careful attention to temperature, humidity, egg handling, and incubation conditions to ensure healthy embryo development. Proper care and handling maximize hatch rates and produce strong chicks. Below are five key instructions to guide you through the process.

  • Select High-Quality Eggs: Choose clean, uncracked eggs from healthy hens, ideally less than 7 days old, as older eggs have lower hatchability. Store them pointed end down at 50-60°F (10-16°C) with 70-75% humidity, and avoid washing to preserve the natural protective membrane.
  • Maintain Optimal Incubation Conditions: Use a reliable incubator set to 99.5°F (37.5°C) for forced-air models or 101°F (38.3°C) for still-air models, with 50-55% humidity for the first 18 days, increasing to 65-70% during the final 3 days. Ensure consistent ventilation to provide oxygen.
  • Turn Eggs Regularly: Turn eggs 3-5 times daily for the first 18 days to prevent the embryo from sticking to the shell. If manual, mark eggs with an “X” and “O” on opposite sides to track rotation; automatic turners simplify this process.
  • Monitor and Candle Eggs: Check eggs weekly using a bright light (candling) to observe embryo development, removing infertile or dead eggs to prevent contamination. Look for a visible vein network by day 7 and movement by day 14.
  • Handle Eggs Gently: Minimize handling to avoid shocking the embryo. Wash hands or wear clean gloves, and avoid sudden temperature changes when moving eggs to the incubator or during candling.

Summary
Hatching chicken eggs demands precision in egg selection, incubation conditions, turning, monitoring, and gentle handling. By maintaining stable temperature and humidity, regularly rotating eggs, and checking development through candling, you can optimize hatch rates. With diligence and care, you’ll increase the chances of producing healthy, vibrant chicks ready to thrive.
